Southern Sojourn = Pintails Pintails arebeautiful and elegantbirds.Theseduckswith theirmuted, yetdistinctive coloring have slim necks, comparatively longbills and long,pointed tails.Thepintailsmigrate early in thewinter and are themostplentifulduckof theWestCoast. Thesepintails are cominginto a southernArkansas ricepaddy. BriskTakeoff = Ring-neckedPheasants A shimmeringdisplayof colors erupts from a northern Illinois farm field as a trioof ring-neckedpheasants take flight, theirgraceful,glittering,multicolorwings inmotion. When it’s time tomake an aerial exit, thesebirds launchwith a rattleofwings and a clamorous staccato cackle.Native toChina, the ring-neckedpheasant is now an all-Americanbird aswell,having adaptedwell to life in theUnitedStates andCanada.Tolerantof humans, thesebirdsoften neston the outskirtsof large cities,but they thrive inopen countrywith aminimumof cover fromgrassy fields, creekbeds and cornfields. Wildpopulationsof this spectacularbird arenow found in thirty-six states and inCanada. GracefulApproach = WoodDucks Oneof themost colorful and recognizableofNorthAmericanwaterfowl, thewoodduck is amedium sizedduck foundmainly in easternNorthAmerica, thewest coastof theUnitedStates and inwesternMexico.WoodDucksget theirname because theirbreeding area is inwoodedmarshes andpondswhere they nest in cavitiesof trees. Thewoodducks in thispainting are entering a typical small,woodedpond in northern Indiana. FeedingTime = Ring-neckedDucks A strong flyer, the ring-neckedduck canquickly reach speedsof up to 45milesper houronce airborne. Itprefers anopen, loose formationwhen flying and usually lands without thepreliminary circling common tomanyotherducks.The ring-neckedduck isnot agregariousbird. It is usually foundwith itsown kind in small numbers. Unlikeother speciesofdivingducks, ring-neckedduckswilloften inhabit smallermarshes andponds inwooded areas.This smallgroup,however, is taking exception and landingnear apondwith rushes justoff the shorelineof a fairly large lake. AutumnPond = Blue-wingedTeals Blue-winged teals are as fast as they arebeautiful.They are capableof speedsup to fortymilesper hour.Thesedabblingducks are someof the smallestwithdrakesweighing about apound and hens even less.When temperatures cool, they areoneof the firstducks to head south. This colorfulgroup is takingoff from apond in northernVermont. TheNewArrivals = Lesser Scaups A favoritedivingduck amongwaterfowlhunters, the lesser scaup (also calledbluebill) isbuilt for swimmingunderwater for longdistances in search of food.They aremostoften foundon largerbodiesofwaterwhere they congregate in hugegroups called “rafts,” especiallyduringmigration.Their population has experienced adramaticdecline in recent yearsbut noone environmental reasonhasbeen identified as a cause for this change.
